Slinging, Signalling And Safe Use Of
Electric Overhead Travelling Cranes (LETI 01)

Who should attend?
Potential and existing operators who have received no formal instruction and those requiring refresher training.

Duration:
1 days including safety awareness and achievement test.

Aims:
To give training and assessment towards the achievement of a unit for NVQ and provide certification and proof of training for use at the delegate's place of work.

Content:
At the end of the course the operative should be able to:

  • understand the requirements for the relevant legislation
  • establish the physical properties of loads and communicate this information to the crane operator
  • select appropriate lifting tackle and attach and detach it correctly and safely
  • direct the actions of a crane moving loads of various weights and dimensions, giving clear and unambiguous signals and in such a manner as to ensure the safety of personnel and plant, determine the serviceability of lifting tackle, and maintain and store it correctly
  • operate an EOTC in a safe and proper manner

Knowledge:
At the end of the course the operative should have an adequate knowledge of:

  • the duties and responsibilities, as required by statute, of a slinger, signaller and EOTC operator
  • the effects of load movement on the stability of a crane
  • potential hazards associated with crane operation and how to overcome them
  • the effect of varying the angles of multi-leg slings and how to calculate their safe working loads
  • methods of establishing weights, centre of gravity and dimensions of loads
  • the standard code of signals
  • operator problems of crane control
  • the factors to consider when planning a lift
  • crane safety devices
  • the safe use of an EOTC
  • the main components of an EOTC and the pre/post safety checks
  • the safe user and inspection of accessories

50% practical
