Slinging,Signalling & Safe Use
of a Scaffold Hoist(LETI 18)

Who should attend?
Potential and existing operators who have received no formal instruction and those requiring refresher training.

Duration:
1 day including safety awareness and achievement test.

Aims:
To give training and assessment towards the LGH Training Certificates of Training achievement and provide proof of training for use at the delegate's place of work.

Content:
At the end of the course the operative should be able to:

  • understand the requirements of the relevant legislation
  • establish the physical properties of loads and communicate this information to other personnel
  • select appropriate lifting accessories and attach and detach it correctly and safely
  • direct the operation of a scaffold hoist moving loads of various weights and dimensions, giving clear and unambiguous signals and in such a manner as to ensure the safety of personnel and plant, determine the serviceability of lifting accessories, and maintain and store it correctly
  • operate a scaffold hoist in a safe and proper manner

Knowledge:
At the end of the course the operative should have an adequate knowledge of:

  • the duties and responsibilities, as required by statute, of a slinger, signaller and scaffold hoist operator
  • the effects of load movement on the stability of a scaffold hoist
  • potential hazards associated with scaffold hoist operation and how to overcome them
  • the effect of varying the angles of multi-leg slings and how to calculate their safe working loads
  • methods of establishing weights, centre of gravity and dimensions of loads
  • the standard code of signals
  • operator problems of scaffold hoist control
  • the factors to consider when planning a lift
  • scaffold hoist safety devices
  • the safe use of a scaffold hoist
  • pre/post use safety checks
  • the safe use and inspection check of specific items of lifting equipment
